AL-HAQQ, The Absolute Truth

Today is the wafat of Imam Ali (AS). As we are filled with sadness and grief, we make a promise to Imam Ali (and ourselves) that we will strive to be more like him.

Today we honor him by talking about the attribute of Allah, the truth. Imam Ali loved Allah (SWT) so much and strive to follow him by embodying the quality of truthfulness. One particular story comes to mind about Imam Ali and being truth to himself, his job and mostly importantly being true to Allah (SWT).

A burning candle was next to Imam Ali (AS) as he was sitting doing work for the State. As Imam Ali (AS) was working Talha and Zubair came to talk to Imam Ali (AS). Imam Ali (AS) greeted them and asks them why they had come to see him. Talha and Zubair said they came to talk to Imam Ali about some personal matters. Imam Ali (AS) blows out the candle next to him and lit another candle.

They were surprised and asked Imam Ali (AS) why he did this. Imam Ali (AS) answered saying that the first candle was bought by the people for when he was doing work for the State. He bought the second candle himself. Since they had come for personal work, he used the candle that he had bought.

Today's Journal Prompts:

  1. How can we stand for the truth?
  2. What is one way we can be true to ourselves?
  3. let’s make a promise to Imam Ali (and yourself) to be truthful in our daily lives
